If you want paint that does its job, then paint the truck however your means allow. Since there isn't really any paint to speak of on any of the parts I have, saving any patina is not an option. There will be even less paint left once I fix all of the dents and holes so I plan to spray a nice coat of rustoleum from an HVLP gun. This will keep the rust at bay and when I scratch it, the paint will be easy to fix. (or not...) I plan to use and have fun with the truck and I do not want to worry about damaging a paint job that is worth more than the truck is. I am on a limited budget so cheaper is better, and I would much rather spend that money on speed and horsepower parts.
Original paint is only original once but you can only do so much to fix what someone else has done.
