Hey, it's a lot cheaper and, I think, makes the truck a lot more interesting than a new paint job. You can always paint it later when you can do it right, but you will never get back the original patina if you mess it up.

Try taking the extra paint off the door with fine steel wool and lacquer thinner or some other solvent if lacquer thinner doesn't work.

In California, it's illegal to have the words "Fire Department" on a civilian vehicle, if that's what your door sign says. It's probably illegal in your state too. But, I doubt any law enforcement officer would bother with an obviously old and out of service vintage vehicle. Just letting you know.

And as far as the rust prevention aspect, a spray can coat of Rustoleum will not stop rust in the really critical areas like the door and cab corners and the roof seam. Those areas rust from the inside. The flat open areas like the fenders and hood can take care of themselves, if given a chance.

If you drive your truck up and down streams and through mud bogs and leave it outside in wet areas or drive on salted roads, it's going to rust.
