This problem started the winter of 2012-13. It happens mainly when it is quite cold outside, below zero.
My driveway is pretty flat, with a steeper rise at the end of it, entering the road.
So, I start the truck up, drive out my driveway to the road, all good. Turn onto the road, get to a 4 way stop in half a mile, Stop, then turn left, all good. A mile and a half later, a Tee intersection, also rising, just like my driveway. When I get to this Tee, I am slowing down, and have my foot lightly on the brake. The truck will shudder, then try to surge ahead, and then stall. It always starts right back up. Occasionally, it will repeat this behavior a few times, but mostly after once it is good to go. There is another intersection about 6 miles later very similar to the one just described, that a couple of times in VERY cold weather will also make this happen.
The constants that I notice are, extreme cold, and an incline.
Oil level is good on the transmission, It was changed and a new filter installed fall of 2012. Truck has 70,000 miles on it.
One other thing that has happened twice, the latest was last week, after running normally for about 6-7 miles, it wouldnt shift down out of drive. I could control it manually, but it would stay in high gear. I got where I was going, spent 4-5 hours there and it functioned normally after that. Temp was only in the teens that day.
None of these issues are repeatable at will, so bringing it to a dealer seems like a waste of time. The truck has a lifetime powertrain warrantee so if there is something to fix, it will be going to the dealer.
Would this sort of transmission behavior throw any codes?
Thanks in advance for any insights,
Tim
