Have you chosen a compressor yet? Are you looking at a 110v or 220v compressor? Opinions may differ but I would recommend buying something substantial. A compressor that is too small quickly leads to frustration. The link gives you some good general info. I started with a 30 gallon 110v import and when I decided to get a sandblasting cabinet I upgraded to an 80 gallon 220v.
As far as tools go, I have a lot of imported stuff, but then over time have picked up better tools when I see them on sale. Craigslist is a good place to look as well. If your wife asks you why you need so many tools ask her why she needs so many shoes.
