Water pipe for shaft sleeve?

I have a shaft on this lathe I'm rebuilding which is badly worn due to running with no oil for a long time. It doesn't carry any significant side load and slop in it doesn't affect the precision of the lathe. But it's extremely loose (0.020 clearance). It runs in bronze bushings, and strangely the steel shaft, rather than the bronze, is where all the wear was. I might just sleeve the seal area and leave it, but I was also thinking I might turn the shaft town smaller, make a thicker-walled sleeve out of some iron pipe for a tight fit on the shaft, then turn the pipe down to final dimension. Any machinists have an opinion of this? Is water pipe (100 year old US-made) too soft for a journal? Speedi-sleeves are too short (I need about 2")
