Using a jumper wire is the same as using a test light EXCEPT that if the vehicle has fuses you will blow them and you run the risk of cooking wires and contacts. The globe in the test light prevents this happening. Sounds like the wire from the amps gauge to the headlight switch may be at fault. Electricity runs through wires like water runs through pipes, if you have water one end and none the other end of a pipe, then there's a break in the pipe - easy. I'm getting frustrated that you won't consider the test light approach, particularly on these type vehicles it is the simplest and most reliable (IMHO) way to check these things.
