John, I never take changes to things at face value, so been doing a tiny bit of research - the old way of wheel bearing adjustment was known as the end play method and a common spec was -.001" to -.005". It was done this way because until very recently there was no way to accurately measure preload. There is/are tools that can now do this and the method you describe is similar to the results posted. I still want to get my head around it, but I can already see why they want to go this way. Some benefits already found in the heavy truck industry are improved seal life, reduced bearing failure, reduced brake wear with improved braking and the elimination of uneven tire wear on steer axles.
