I got them out, and they are indeed tapered. Took the right hand end block off the lathe by prying and bending (hopefully not permanently) the lead screw, which let me drop the apron enough to clear the pins. It took a good whack with a brass hammer to knock them out so I doubt I could have pulled them by drilling and tapping them. Now I have to get the apron off the keyed drive shaft. They didn't cut the keyway all the way to the end, so I suspect I have to get into the feed gear box and disconnect it at that end and pull it out. With the carriage off the apron, I can see I really need to get the apron off to clean things up in and behind it. There's also a loose screw down inside it and the only way to tighten it is to take things apart more.
