The only place taper pins get driven into blind holes is for crack repair. And those pins are cast iron.

So sharpen the end of a screwdriver and hammer it in to separate enough for the parts to separate far enough that the pin is no problem.

But first make for darn sure there are no overlooked screws.

My own inported lathe is so old it was made in Formosa. I had to do some repairs when I first got it. I did find it easiest to run the carriage back and forth, away from the lead screw end that I was working on. The the screwdriver/wedge/prybar, flexing the lead screw.
