Well, if you didn't mess with the valve timing (the timing chain) and you have good compression, then on to fuel and ignition. Have you tried starter fluid or some gas into the carb, just to check the fuel end of things? But, the way it tries to start, it's probably ignition.
Eventually, you will get it figured out. I'm thinking the real challenge will be seeing whether your internal engine work holds up.
