If you order a filter from Vintage Power Wagons (at least in the past) they will tell you to do exactly that to make their filter fit.

I think if you actually give it a try, you will not be concerned. The filter media is densely packed and peels off in layers. There is no chance, really, of it fitting too loose unless you go overboard. It's more a thing of being able to get it in the canister at all. Not making it a drop in fit.

Being uneven is evidently not a problem (at least to the manufacturers) as there is a hole up the middle. On the OEM filters, it was cone shaped.

The filters available now will never filter like the OEM filters that had the metal funnel and the heavy spring inside.

I suspect we are fooling ourselves anyway about the efficacy of these sock filters. Volkswagens and some Dodges came without filters. Not that it isn't a whole lot better to have some effective oil filtration system, but you will probably never know if the filter is doing its job or not.
