I don't think you can find the proper sock filter anymore. It's O.K. to unwrap the sock and remove some of the media. But, I had a NORS Chrysler filter and it still took plenty of effort to get it stuffed into the canister.
I haven't actually used a Baldwin filter. I know other guys here use them. I have some NOS filters that I combine with the metal funnel from the Chrysler filter to make my own filters. Maybe, you are just underestimating the amount of effort it takes to get the filter in.
