Old cars and trucks you can get away with a test light. Today's cars and trucks you cant. Use a test light are a volt meter, DVOM start at the battery. Then go the hot lead from the battery to the starter relay or starter. Check both ground cable and hot cables. I have seen just a poor connection at the battery posts or ground on engine block. Or turn the headlights on and start moving the cables and wire connections around. Once the lights pop on you are close to the bad connections. Good luck. Bill.
