Get a test light and work your way along the system from the battery positive until you find where there is no current.
The ammeter feeds everything but the starter, so the starter should work if you take a hot lead from the battery to one of the terminals on the starter solenoid.
This is an easy problem that you should be able to fix without resorting to a mechanic.
Sitting down awhile with a wiring diagram will really help.
