The VIN question depends on the state you live in.

In California, you would preserve the "paper trail" and the old VIN plate. Then you would take all your evidence and the truck with the new cab to the California Highway patrol. If the CHP is satisfied, they would issue and attach a new VIN sticker.

Before you get too far, I would visit whoever is responsible in your state and run everything by them first. They may even want to examine and document the VIN plate on the old truck before you make any swaps.

Make sure you get a receipt for the cab you are purchasing, you will need it for the paper trail. Having the certificate of vehicle ownership that goes with the VIN plate may also be necessary.
