Several years ago, my '49 flatfender had the same problem (drove dog-trot). I discovered the left side of the rear axle housing had slipped back. The bolt that goes down the middle of the spring stack and into the top of the spring pad had sheared off, after years of rust.

I replaced it with a grade 8 bolt that fit into the stack (I don't remember the exact size, but it's a common size). I had to grind down the bolt head so that it was rounded and would then fit into the recess in the top of the spring pad.

This has worked fine since then. (Of course I've only put a couple of thousand miles on the truck since that time, but I see no reason that this shouldn't work for many, many miles.)

Good luck!

Matt
