Keeping in the spirit of forum debates, the figures you cite only show PEAK HP & torque.

I'd like to see a graph showing the torque and HP side by side for the 318A & LA.

Do both have similar torque curves? My understanding is that the 318A was designed with small runners for truck applications where low end torque was needed, and supposedly it makes more low end torque than a stock 318LA.

Going further, yes, you can get substantial gains by dropping 360 heads onto a 318 and shaving the heads to make up for the compression loss. In fact, a .060 over 318 is a 327, so this makes a poor man's almost-340. But doing so drops the low end torque because you've shifted the RPM power band higher. I would also imagine the fuel economy would be worse, unless the truck was constantly at gross weight.
