Your problem may be a bad rubber fuel line instead of a bad fuel pump. Rubber fuel lines can have a piece come loose inside and will sometimes act like a check valve. Also, a fuel line (metal or rubber) with a small hole in it will also drive you crazy trying to figure it out. Hang onto your original fuel pump and try to determine if your fuel lines (both rubber and metal) are OK.
