Anybody ever rebuilt a starter clutch?

Took the W-200 out for a drive the other day to get some gas for the lawnmower. When trying to leave the gas station I turned the key and got a high pitched whine but no cranking. After an embarrased push to get it rolling in front of sneering onlookers - I roll-started it to get it home.

Took off the starter and found springs and rollers coming out of the starter clutch area - put it back together last night after spending several minutes of trial and error parts-fitting. Put it back in the truck and it started, but it failed to disengage from the flywheel and scattered parts again.

My question - the clutch springs and rollers fit into the drive unit and there is a plate and "sleeve" that keeps the springs and rollers in the drive unit - is this supposed to be affixed to the drive unit in some way? Mine showed no signs of being joined so I left it loose, but I could see how the springs and rollers could easily work their way out without this plate and sleeve keeping them in their place.

Unless someone tells me otherwise, I'm going to pull the starter again and slap some RTV between the sleeve and the drive unit to hold everything in place and try it again.

Thanks,

Ken
