Ok, I'm spoiled. I bought a nifty 250 amp Miller wire drive that has all the bells.
I'd say 98% of the time it's just set for .035 wire. About 19 feet per minute and 50 volts. That's about perfect for .035, and that setting does 1/8" through 1/4" material. Body sheet metal needs .024 wire and commensurately reduced settings. All brands of units work well. Variable speed and heat is very desirable.

Heck, find a used unit. Even if the handpiece and the conduit is shot, that's fairly cheap. Just watch the odd brands for parts availability down the road. As others said, don't mess with the flux cored wire, get the gas.

Just remember that wire drive dosen't penetrate well. It's a production method, and is better at filling gaps and depositing a lot of metal. Be sure the metal is ground clean in the weld zone.
