Basically it's a device that separates the high-current part of the circuit from the measuring part of the circuit. The high current goes through the shunt rather than through the meter itself (it "shunts" the current around the meter) and in going through the shunt, it generates a little bit of voltage, which is enough to work the meter. The advantage is you don't have to run heavy high-current wires directly to the meter. You can put the shunt near the alternator and battery, and just run small wires to the meter.

The higher powered the charging system and the further away it is from the instrument panel, the greater the advantage of using a shunt. That's why they're common on boats.
