amp gauge question

could the amp gauge in our turcks be run via a shunt? IF so how would you determine which shunt to use? I liked that design when I use to work on old boats. the current runs through the shunt in the engine compartment and the just 2, 18 gauge wires tapped off that run off that up to the amp gauge.
