I've been reading about the 5.4 Ford engine. What a mess. No wonder Toyota is the leading car manufacturer in the world.

It's possible to break all the plugs while taking them out on a 5.4 engine. Champion makes an improved plug that won't break. Also, the plugs are only torqued to something like 11 lb/ft.

Several tool companies make removal kits that do what Tim did, but with purpose built tools. They're about $100 though. Probably worth it though if you break a plug.

Good tip about trying to blow the porcelain out by starting the engine. The tool kit pushes it through.

Pat Goss recommends loosening the plugs 1/2 turn then pouring in some carb clean and letting it sit a few hours. Evidently, built up carbon along the spark plug body is the problem.
