I'd check the voltage with the engine reved up and nothing turned on, just to make sure it stayed reasonable (7.2 max) and the ammeter didn't show a charge with the battery voltage that high. If the regulator can't "dial down" the generator enough, the problem will be over-charging of the battery. If the battery's not over-charging, the only ill effect will be that you can only get half the current out of it that you could from a correct 6V generator. If that's still enough to keep the battery charged on a long drive at night with the headlights and heater blower on I'd call it goo.
