O.K., here's the question. Will a 6 volt regulator be able to regulate the voltage from a 12 volt generator to a safe level for a 6 volt system.

The reason I ask is that I discovered today that the generator in my old 48 FFPW is 12 volts. I brought this truck back from the dead and have redone the entire electrical system and every thing works including the gauges and lights. There was no battery in the truck when I got it and I assumed that the truck had not been converted to 12 volts because it had not been driven in 20 years.

I plan on going back to a 6 volt generator, but have I just been lucky and the 12 volt generator will eventually fry the regulator and the electrical system? I know it's not the best setup for longevity, buy should I be afraid to run the truck until I change the generator?

I plan on checking the charging voltage, but in the meantime maybe I should disconnect the generator?

By the way, the generator seems to charge the system normally. No evidence of any unusual overcharging.
