If it's sat for a long time, maybe the grease is just stiff and sticky. A good cleaning might be all it needs. The loose part needs to spin very easily on the spiral-cut shaft. If the starter engaged last time, even if it was 10 years ago, it should engage now. The part that wears out in the "bendix" is the free-running clutch enclosed in the circular housing behind the pinion gear. When it wears out, it slips. Usually they start to slip but take a while to get to the point where they totally fail. I've replaced several but never had one suddenly go from totally good to totally bad. Yes, you have to take the starter apart to change the bendix, but it's easy. Finding the right one is not always so easy. I discovered there were ones with at least two different tooth counts used on 230s. Also, not all 230 starters used a bendix. Some used the floor-pedal lever and some used a solenoid. My hunch is if you take it apart and clean it all up, it will probably work.
