Overlap the ends to get it in, then shine a light in from the other side and look for light between ring and wall.

Rings start out with about 3/4" gap, and get squashed onto the cylinder. An extra 1/8" isn't necessarily tooo bad. They may wear faster, but how long will it take to get 20,000 miles on a tractor?
