One more caveat with inverters is that you can't be sure whether either side of the AC output is tied to ground or not. The premise of house wiring is that there is a "neutral" that is tied to ground at the breaker panel. With some inverters, the "neutral" (wide slot) on the output socket is indeed tied to the internal ground, but on some of them the midpoint of the AC output is tied to ground, and the two output conductors swing symmetrically around that mid-point ground, out of phase with each other. If you measure from either output to ground you'll get 60 volts AC. Most modern loads don't care, unless there's an internal ground-neutral short that has previously gone unnoticed, but some older radios, for example, had the chassis tied to neutral, which if you plugged them into this kind of inverter, would end up being 60 volts hot.
