Before you do any of these, make sure the nut is the correct thread and pitch. I have run across wrong size ones being used before, especially on European-return vehicle components. After that, follow this primer.

1. Get a Thread Restoration File (McMaster Car, etc.) in the appropriate thread and clean it up. This is about a $20.00 investment. If you can raise threads enough to re-thread the nut, you are halfway done. It doesn't look like this will based on what I can see, so you will probably have to go to step 2.

2. Get the spindle restoration tool. This is available for rental at some places, and basically is like a pipe wrench with a set of teeth that match the spindle threads. It is wider than the thread restoration file, and you put it on the good threads (the jaws of the wrench will be parallel to the threads) and spin it from inner threads to outer threads. If you couldn't raise threads with a thread file, you probably won't get them up with this tool.

3. Get a new one and weld it on.
