acetylene should be lighter than air-- anybody else had this?

Oxygen has a molecular weight of 32, nitrogen is 28 and acetylene is 26. So they are very nearly the same and although C2H2 is slightly lighter than the components of air, I would expect it to mix rapidly with air and become dispersed quickly.
