Read the amp rating on the motors, they don't lie there. I bet your Sears motor HP says "special", but the amps is about right for 2 1/2 hp.
The 7.5 hp motor probably draws about 30 amps? But they spec a higher breaker to make sure it will start at high pressure. Also, REAL comps have a compression relief system.
