Dave, I ran 10 gauge wire to my front garage and had difficulty running a 5 Hp compressor. If you remember the layout of my property both of my garages are no more than 125 feet. I had to start with an empty tank to start the compressor. Then when it pumped up and shut off, I had to turn the switch off, use the air in my 80 gallon tank, then drain it to restart the compressor. What a pain!!!
I ran # 4 wire (2002 B4 prices went up) when I built my back garage.

If you have to run new wire 300 feet I would cosider buying a 1000 foot coil of at least #8 preferably # 6 wire. Run 3 pieces of wire thru buried conduit. I think you will find this to be much more economical than buying underground cable.
