How are those 50 amp breakers hooked up. They better not be in parallel feeding one wire, because one will always carry more of the load than the other. If your wiring is so funky that somebody put two breakers feeding one wire, there's no telling what all is going on.

Which breaker is the Sears compressor tripping? If it's tripping one of the 50s, that breaker is worn out. Most breakers are designed so that when they wear out they will trip more readily. The only ones that were the other way around were the Zinsco/Sylvania breakers, which lost their UL listing because they had a habit of failing to trip when they wore out.

Tell me how those 50 amp breakers are hooked up, and what gauge of wire you have running out to the barn and then I can tell you more about it. You're not talking about to 50 amp breakers with their handles tied together as a 2-pole breaker are you? Because if that's the case, it's normal and you have a 50 amp 240 volt circuit.
