It was the battery. After putting the charged battery back in the amp gauge settled down to a slight positive reading. The pic shows what it was reading when I initially started it. The bottom shows a few minutes later. It is reading even lower after about 15 minutes running.
It's all good now. Thanks for all the responses. Oh, and the smoke has stopped too. The oil I put in the cylinders has burned off.
