Yep, the needle should be pretty close to center after a good run. The ignition doesn't draw much.

If the ammeter comes down, you are probably good to go. But, 50 amps is a lot of current for an old truck. Be careful you don't have an intermittent problem.

The first step in dealing with these problems is to make sure you have a good fully charged battery. A load tester ($25.00 at Harbor Freight) is good tool to have around.
