Kempner, Texas, is a small town with about 1200 residents. Kempner is a “poke and plumb” town. Poke your head out the car window and you’re plumb out of town. US Highway 190 is the main street and the “entering” and “leaving” signs are about two miles apart. (Both signs used to be on the same post.) The speed limit on one and a half miles of it is 75 miles per hour. There are two intersecting roads, neither of which is a cross street so those are “T” intersections.

The Kempner Power Wagon Museum is at the corner of US 190 (75 mph) and FM 2808 (60 mph). It’s very exciting pulling out into the 75 mph traffic, even with my 2005 Power Wagon. The folks around here must think I need to get my pencil sharpened because they make a gesture that looks like there’s a crank on the side of their heads when they go roaring past.

Newspaper coverage for the 20,000 Lampasas County residents is provided twice a week by the Lampasas Dispatch Record. The other day a young L.D.R. reporter sought me out to explain the Power Wagon Museum. Here’s his version put together from a visit and my web page www.texaspowerwagon.com .

The other day this article was on the L.D.R. front page. Now, more of the local folks seem to think my pencils are sharp enough. A few days ago I celebrated my 76th birthday. A few of my neighbors have told me they were happy for the article and glad to know that I was crazy - but not dangerous.
