It's a hot bulb engine, pretty much like a single cylinder diesel, hence the heating.

When it is hot, and the compression is up, it would be really difficult to turn over, hence the bolt on the front of it that acts as a decompressor.

Did you spot that the used the steering wheel assembly as the starting handle too? German engineering there.
