I have read and reread the NEC to make sure I can identify what IS code and what ISN'T code...

If I see the proper rated box, wire and location, and the wires have adequate strain relief, what is required is a adequate mechanical connection followed by an adequate electrical insulation. A UL or FM approved wire nut, of the correct size will result in both a good mechanical connection with proper electrical resistance.

My process is to first strip and I like the strippers with the notches for each gauge, then align, trim the end, then use the proper size, single use wire nut, THEN tape the wire nut and two inches up the wires.

The inspector is NOT going to remove the wire nut. Copper tends to work harden less than aluminum and a couple of cycles won't hurt anything.

And PLEASE get your electrical hardware at a reliable source, avoid the HF bonus packs or the connector by the pound at the local flea market.

I was trained years ago to inspect the electrical installations at defense nuclear facilities.
