I've purchased sets off EBay that are plated and have had no problem with flaking, but they are plated knowing they will be hit with an impact wrench. I guess it will all depend on how the cadmium/zinc is applied. However, I don't use an impact wrench to tighten the nuts, you'll not be able to get them loose out on the road with a flat. There are stainless steel lugs available that can be polished for a permanent higher sheen.
