I think I have a better handle on what's going on now that I had a chance to discuss it.
One other hint: I used a Harbor Freight wood clamp, the kind that's a long rail with plastic padded clamps. It was just the ticket to clamp the partially raised, but unsecured, window in place while I was working on the lifting mechanism.
