Fact that the idle screw can be screwed all the way in and it runs better suggests a vacuum leak . You said you had fuel dripping out the butterfly shaft, so how worn is the shaft/hole?? I would check for vacuum leaks around the carb base to manifold and manifold to block, but it's sounding more like a carb rebuild coming up soon. You didn't say if you have a vacuum advance distributor? If so, you might want to check the plumbing and advance diafragm.
