They are held in place by straps over the tires during transport and there is a big eye bolt for towing in with the jack. There are plugs in the bumper that pop out so you can thread the big eye bolt into a secure tow point.
Even on cars with the hooks underneath you can do a lot of damage to the body if the tow angle is wrong so I think the eye bolts are an improvement for recovering stuck vehicles.
