the gw bridge takes in several million dollars per day! trucks pay $75 and cars pay $13. each year truck toll goes up $10 and the cars go up one. the other river crossings charge about the same. that money is stolen by the port authority and is redistributed to non profitable projects like building the freedom tower in downtown manhattan and then whats left gets spread around to the airports. it is not spent on the roads or bridges. the bridges and tunnels that are mta owned take the daily millions and subsidize the subways so wall streeters can ride the subway for 2.50 instead of 15 dollars. there are less truckers than straphangers so we get the shaft. with regards to damage done to the roads - fuel tax is based on per gallon of fuel used. trucks in this area get 6mpg. 60 cents tax/ 6mpg = 10cents per driven mile. We also pay highway use tax. same gallon of fuel in a prius 60/50mpg = 1.2 cents per mile.
