Thickness only important as long as the ring doesn't fall off the piston, but shape, style and end gap are. I like the multi-piece oil rings and find them much better than the single piece ones. There are several types, usually have an expander and a couple side pieces that you assemble in the oil ring groove, you can even have the end gaps for each piece in a different location. Google piston rings to learn about the different types.
