Piston ring end-gap, perhaps too large?

I took the advice from the previous forum and stuck the top compression ring 5/8 down, and then pulled out my yard-stick to measure the gap. If I understand the specs, the piston-ring end gap which we are seeing should be 0.007". As seen, it is more like 3/16". I suspect that wear would not cause this much increase? Wrong rings installed?

Also, I used another good suggestion and I inverted the piston and used that to gauge the bore at the top 1/2" down. The piston skirt was measuring 3.280 wide, and I could get a 0.015 blade in there firmly. The piston is 0.040 oversize, so that is relatively consistent with my other measurements of about 3.292-3.295 with my telescoping gauge. I did not measure at the bottom of the bore.

Am I off base to be thinking that the rings are wrong and that is going to be a significant factor in my oil and blow-by issues? Is 0.005 within reasonably wear to "just ring it"?

Thanks,

don
