Pull off the rings , turn the piston upside down and stick it in the cylinder . Slide it in until the skirt is about 5/16 below the top of the block . Now see how thick a leaf feeler guage you can get between the piston and the cylinder wall . Do not force it but it should take about 5lbs of force to pull the feeler guage out . Now you have a rough idea of your clearance.
You can do the same at the bottom of the bore with the piston facing the normal way . Just do the measurement from the bottom of the block . The difference in the top and bottom number will equal the taper.
If you are good, the measurement can be quite accurate.
