Piston/rings - what might I look for?

Hi all,

Prior to my disassembly (the pistons are out thanks to the ridge reamer (see previous thread)), my 230 smoked a lot once it got heated up and my leak-down testing showed about 60-70% loss (although my cold, dry compression test seemed okay at 110). But there was a lot of air moving down the cylinder when the valves were closed.

So I expected to be able to "see" something (although I don't know what) - but my newly extracted pistons/rings things look pretty good - nothing is broken, they don't look particularly warn, etc. But would I be able to tell? If things are just happily wearing out together would there be any thing that I would see through casual inspection?

One thing that surprised me is how loose the rings are on the piston they really rattle around. They are easily compressed by hand, and the ends do fit pretty closely. Is this typical? They don't even seem to be very dirty, that picture is as removed, just rubbed off some oil.

Is there anything I should check out on the piston prior to getting new rings?

As always, thanks for any thoughts,

don
