I went through this with my W300. I went to the registry to get a new title for the truck, in my name. The local registry wanted to charge me 6.25% tax, based on a 1959 D300, which was valued at $6,000. I told the woman that it wasn't the same truck. Lucky for me they didn't have a W300 in their database. They called Boston; they didn't have a W300 in their database either, so they agreed to charge me tax based on the price written on the back of the title.
I explained to the woman that the truck wasn't even running, so there was no way it would be worth $6,000. She couldn't understand why I would buy a truck that wasn't running.
