Just guessing, but with all the gunk that builds up in these engines, the bottom of the cylinder could have been covered and starved of coolant. Then, when it cracked, the gunk may have sealed the leak. As I said, just conjecture. But, remember, the system is not pressurized, so you may not get the leak you expect with a pressurized system.

Is the crack located where you could see it in the coolant jacket if you removed a freeze plug? Without looking, I don't remember if the number one cylinder if one of the cylinders you can see.
