My first M37 had (and still has) about 90 in all cylinders and it runs okay. Not great, but okay. It's strong enough to power itself up over the mountain (1500 feet in 2 miles). I think the main effect is it uses a lot more more gas than it should. Runs smooth enough and starts pretty easy, though. This truck came with no air cleaner or oil filter, which undoubtedly accounts for the wear.

The thing a wet test would tell you is whether the rings are shot. If the compression stays the same after squirting a teaspoon or so of oil in the cylinder, the valves need grinding. If the compression comes up to normal for a little while with that slug of oil in there, then the valves are okay and you should push the pistons out, look for broken rings, and mike the pistons and bores. It still might only need a new set of rings.
